June is recognized annually as Pride Month, an observance that commemorates the history of and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community while also raising awareness about the gay rights movement.
The month of June coincides with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back against police brutality. The days-long conflict resulted in heightened visibility of LGBTQIA+ discrimination in the United States and galvanized the call for equal rights.
Each year, Pride Month observances include parades, festivals, marches, memorials, and educational events that are open to members of the LGBTQIA+ community as well as allies, friends, and family members.
